Saddle Fitting

Designed for maximum adjustability, our saddles can be adjusted to fit any horse, no matter how their body changes over time. This ensures long-term comfort and performance for both horse and rider.

Optimized for Comfort & Performance

Horses are naturally asymmetrical, often carrying one shoulder ahead of the other or developing uneven back and loin muscles due to their anatomy or movement patterns. A properly fitted saddle is essential to compensate for this asymmetry, allowing the rider to sit in perfect balance. This not only makes it easier for the horse to carry the rider but also promotes the development of healthy, even musculature.

Traditional saddles often lack the level of adjustability required to achieve a truly perfect fit. Only a saddle with an adjustable tree and a method for compensating for lateral asymmetry can ensure an ideal fit tailored to the horse’s unique shape.

At DK Saddlery, our saddles are designed with maximum adjustability in mind. Featuring an adjustable German gullet plate and a flexible tree, our saddles can be adjusted to fit any horse, no matter how their body changes over time. This ensures long-term comfort and performance for both horse and rider.

To further enhance the fit, we incorporate the Flair Air-Panel System, which provides the tools necessary for precision saddle fitting. Using this system, a professional saddle fitter can fine-tune the saddle by observing the horse and rider at various gaits and adjusting the air pressure in the Flair panels. This dynamic system ensures that the fit remains perfect even as the horse’s musculature evolves.

At DK Saddlery, we believe a well-fitted saddle is the foundation of a successful partnership between horse and rider. With our innovative designs and expertise, we ensure every saddle supports comfort, balance, and performance at the highest level.

Why Saddle Fitting is Important

Proper saddle fitting is essential for the health, comfort, and performance of both horse and rider. An ill-fitting saddle can cause discomfort, pain, and even long-term physical damage to a horse, such as muscle atrophy, restricted movement, and uneven development. For the rider, a poorly fitted saddle can lead to imbalance, discomfort, and difficulty maintaining proper position, which can negatively affect communication with the horse. A well-fitted saddle ensures even weight distribution, promotes freedom of movement, and allows the horse to develop healthy musculature while carrying the rider with ease. Ultimately, proper saddle fitting fosters harmony, balance, and trust between horse and rider, creating the foundation for optimal performance and a successful partnership.

Why Are Sweat Marks Important?

Proper sweat marks should include large, symmetrical dry spots—at least 6” x 6” on both sides. Small dry spots indicate pressure points, which can cause discomfort for the horse. Each spot should be identical in placement in size and shape from right to left. This will ensure you have a correct asymmetrical fit. If one spot is larger or smaller and differently placed on the shoulder this indicates it is not balanced correctly.

Dry spots represent the areas of support provided by the saddle. To ensure the horse’s comfort, the saddle must distribute weight and pressure evenly across a large surface area. Think of it this way: would you prefer someone pressing their thumb into your shoulder or applying the same pressure with their palm? The larger contact area feels far more comfortable, and the same principle applies to your horse.
